Schenectady police blocking Crane Street between Francis and Fifth avenues Tuesday afternoon

SCHENECTADY - One person was taken into custody Tuesday evening after an hours long search on Crane Street following reports of a fight and shots fired, police said.

Officers also recovered a handgun, police said.

The identity of the person and any charges filed were not immediately available Wednesday morning.

Two arrested after Crane Street incident, search, police say

The incident began at around 1 p.m. in the 900 block of Crane Street. Police then received the report of a fight and shots fired.

Arriving officers spoke to people in the area and established a perimeter as they searched for the suspect, police said.

Officers blocked off the street with their vehicles.

One officer could be heard over a loudspeaker addressing someone at a particular address and saying to come out of the building with their hands up.

Police also had area schools secured as a precaution, no threats were made.

Police continued to search into the evening, with the help of the department’s Special Operations Squad, the New York State Police, the Schenectady County Street Crimes Task Force, the Schenectady County Sheriff’s Office, and the Niskayuna Police Department, police said.

Police then found a suspect at about 9:41 p.m. in the search area and took the person in for questioning, police said.

The incident remained under investigation.

Crane Street and impacted surrounding streets were to be reopened during the night.
