On April 8, a total solar eclipse will occur. The celestial event will be visible in multiple locales across the country, including some not too far from the Capital Region. Schenectady will experience 97.5% coverage.

Several local businesses and organizations will host viewing parties for community members to witness the stellar event.

LIBRARIES/MUSEUMS

The following county libraries will have viewing parties complete with moon-themed treats and eclipse glasses — or make-it-yourself eclipse viewers.

  • Hon. Karen B. Johnson (Central) Library, 99 Clinton Street in Schenectady
  • Mont Pleasant Branch Library, 1036 Crane Street in Schenectady
  • Niskayuna Branch Library, 2400 Nott Street East in Niskayuna
  • Rotterdam Branch Library, 1100 N. Westcott Road in Rotterdam

Throughout this week, several libraries will also host educational programs in preparation of the upcoming eclipse.

miSci will also have a viewing party where attendees will be able to view the eclipse through telescopes and other gear at the museum. Tickets are $25 and able to be purchased on the museum’s website. Tickets include a pair of eclipse glasses for safe viewing.

The Mechanicville Public Library will also host a viewing party. A free pair of eclipse glasses is available for each library card holder. From 2:12 to 4:37 p.m., residents can gather outside on blankets or picnic chairs, or head inside for a livestream viewing.

CRAFTS

The Niskayuna Public Library will hold an event where children ages six to 13 can make DIY cardboard eclipse viewers on Thursday at 2 p.m. Contact the library to register.
