Braves fall to Mechanicville, 20-10
FONDA — The Fonda-Fultonville Braves put together a strong second quarter to take a 10-6 lead into the halftime break.
However, Mechanicville rallied back with a 54-yard touchdown pass from Luciano D’Ambro to Kyle Johnson to retake the lead and held off the Braves for a 20-10 Class C victory Saturday afternoon at John Boshart Field at Fonda-Fultonville High School.
The Red Raiders got on the board in the opening quarter when D’Ambro turned a fourth-and-short play into a 48-yard touchdown run.
With running back Giovanni “Bonnz” DiCaprio who rush for 139 yards and three touchdowns last week against Corinth-Fort Edward sidelined with an injury, Zen Myles picked up the bulk of the running game for the Braves and broke several runs for first downs to help the Braves move the ball deep into Mechanicville territory. Connor Weaver completed the drive with an 5-yard touchdown pass to Nate Mycek. Weaver lined up for the point after kick but a penalty against the Red Raiders moved the ball to the 2-yard line, where Jonathan Cranker ran the ball in from for the 2-point conversion and an 8-6 lead.
It took only 15 seconds for Braves to put more points on the board as Derek Duval’s kick off was mishandled and downed by the Red Raiders at their 1-yard line.
Myles and Cranker led a strong pass rush by the Braves that resulted in D’Ambro being tackled in the end zone for a safety and a 10-6 Fonda-Fultonville lead.
The lead would not hold up though as D’Ambro hit Johnson with a 54-yard touchdown pass and Mason Angiano gathered up a fumble by a Mechanicville runner and ran it in from 8 yards out to cap off the 20-10 victory.
D’Ambro finished with 74 yards rushing and a touchdown to go with a 5-for-8 passing effort for 106-yards and a touchdown. Joe Sanchez added 32 yards rushing on nine carries, while Johnson finished with three receptions for 84 yards and a touchdown.
Myles finished with 51 yards rushing on 17 carries and a 27-yard pass reception. Weaver added 27 yards rushing on nine carries to go with a 6-for-21 passing effort for 41 yards, a touchdown and two interceptions.
Fonda-Fultonville (1-1) will host Granville (0-2) at 1 p.m. Saturday, while Mechanicville (2-1) will host Johnstown (1-1) at 7 p.m. Friday.
