South High beats Amsterdam in Foothills showdown

SOUTH GLENS FALLS — In a showdown of undefeated Foothills Council contenders, the South Glens Falls girls basketball team was able to do something it has never done — defeat the Amsterdam Lady Rams.

In a game that was recently scheduled due to schedule changes, the Bulldogs used a high-pressure defense and a 26-point performance from Hannah Breen to defeat Amsterdam 59-48 Tuesday at South Glens Falls High School.

Amsterdam held a slim 19-18 lead at the half before South High pulled ahead 36-32 at the end of the third period. The Bulldogs put together their best scoring effort in the fourth quarter, outscoring Amsterdam 23-16 to lock up the victory.

Andie Gannon led Amsterdam with 19 points, while Antonia May finished with 17 and Jackie Stanavich added 10 points.

Breen hit four 3-pointers in her game-high 26-point performance for South Glens Falls, while Sydney Hart had made 12 free throws en route to her 16-point effort and Alivia Killian hit three 3-pointers to finish with nine points.

Due to the pandemic and COVID-19 mandates, Amsterdam has been playing in the Montgomery County League and is now 6-1 on the season, while South High has been competing in the Saratoga County League and has a 7-0 record.

GALWAY — Ryleigh Dempsey hit for a game-high 20 points to lead Saratoga Central Catholic to victory over Galway in Saratoga County League action Tuesday at Galway High School.

Ashley Upson joined her in double-digits with 12 points for the Lady Saints, and Molly O’Reilly chipped in with nine.

Ryan Ripepi led Galway with 14 points, while Grace O’Brien had six points and Hannah French finished with four.

JOHNSTOWN — Anna Lee connected for 18 points to lead Johnstown past Gloversville 79-23 in Fulton County League action Monday night at Johnstown High School.

Jayden Chest added 12 points for the Lady Bills, while Kallie Ahern had 10 points and Ayaka Sasaki added eight points as 11 players put points in the book for Johnstown.

Abigail Curtis led Gloversville with 16 points, including two 3-pointers, Anna Murphy, Alexandra Albanese and Brooke Dutcher had two points apiece and Allie Salvione closed out the Lady Dragons scoring with a point.

SARATOGA SPRINGS — Saratoga Central Catholic used a 42-27 run through the middle quarters to take command and defeat Galway 65-47 in Saratoga County League action Tuesday at Saratoga Central Catholic High School.

Bredan Shader led Galway with 15 points, including three 3-pointers, while Braden Boudreau connected for 13 points and Zach Kenyon added eight.

Hayden Day paced Spa Catholic with 20 points, while Anthony Barile hit three 3-pointers in his 17-point effort and Robbie Bolen III finished with 13 points.
