FoJo swimmers fall in season opener

JOHNSTOWN — Vincent Rizzo and Scout Huckans posted individual victories and was part of the victorious 200-yard medley relay team as the co-ed Fonda-Johnstown swim team took to the pool for their first meet of the season Friday afternoon at Johnstown High School.

Despite a strong showing, FoJo came up on the short end of the 102-66 against the Queensbury Spartans, who swam at their home pool at the Queensbury Elementary School.

Rizzo posted the fast time of 25.09 in the 50-yard freestyle and placed second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5:57.96.

Huckans recorded the fast time of 1:10.50 in the 100-yard backstroke and placed second in the 100-yard freestyle with her time of 1:02.42.

Huckans and Rizzo teamed with Connor Harding and Jocelyn Bush to win the 200-yard medley relay with their time of 2:02.43.

Harding also posted a pair of runner-up finishes in the meet, placing second in the 200IM (2:34.35) and the 100-yard butterfly with a time of 1:13.62.

“We have numbers,” Fonda-Johnstown coach Julianna Popp said. “With 17, this is the largest team we have had in a long time. If it was a regular year, our girls would have to hit the boys standards for Section II but because we got paused it has been a lot easier for us by setting our own personal goals. I am very excited and glad to be back. It is great to have a co-ed team and to see so many kids came out for swimming between Johnstown and Fonda-Fultonville.”

CANAJOHARIE — Kurt Sunderland and Matthew Travis posted a pair of individual victories apiece for Canajoharie-Fort Plain but it was not enough as Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk came away with a 96-76 virtual victory Friday afternoon.

Samantha Barlow picked up the victory in the 100-yard freestyle for C-FP with her time of 1:03.60.

“We had a good showing tonight,” Canajoharie-Fort Plain coach Kevin Stuttle said. “Several times earned kids personal records and there are several times that are close. I have been impressed with how hard the kids have worked at practice and how the times are reflective of a ‘normal’ season. We are so thankful to be able to go and compete as well. Myself, along with coach Blake Smith have been emphasizing to the kids that this opportunity, especially this year, is one to embrace and be thankful for. There are so many student athletes that have missed the chance this year to compete.”
