RACING AROUND: Racetracks to remain without fans

Getting fans back in the stands at local racetracks will take a little bit longer now.

On Tuesday, Executive Order 202.32 that allowed racetracks to operate without fans in attendance was extended through Aug. 20. It is unfortunate because fans are missing out on some close racing.

Fortunately, fans can see the live action from some of the tracks streamed on Dirt Track Digest.tv, but they cannot be everywhere.

The past couple of weeks racing at Glen Ridge Motorsports Park has featured some back-and-forth battles for the lead often with the winner being decided in the final five laps.

Parity has also been key at The Ridge with seven different drivers — Andrew Buff, Brendan Gibbons, Billy August, Scott McCoy, Tucker O’Connor, Travis Green and Tony Farone — posting victories in the Red Chair 602 Crate Sportsman.

It has been nice seeing a consistent amount of quality cars in all divisions in the pit area so far this year.

After a two-week hiatus, Fonda Speedway reopens this Saturday, without fans in the stands or the infield drive-in.

Saturday’s program will feature all the regular divisions with, thanks to a loyal and dedicated fan, the modifieds will be racing for $3,000-to-win.

Racing will return on Wednesday night with a special event.

The “7-Come-11” special will feature the modifieds, Crate 602 Sportsman division and the pro stocks. Sunoco Modifieds will battle in a 30-lap feature for a minimum of $3,000 to win. Drivers pre-registering for the event will receive an additional $711 in their pay envelope for a total of $3,711.

Drivers can “cash in their chips” and pre-register by e-mailing the speedway at fondaspdwy@gmail.com. There is no cost to register for this event in advance.

The Swagger Factory Apparel Crate 602 Sportsman will run 25 laps for $1,000 to win while the pro stocks will go 20 laps for $800 to win. All events will feature draw for starting positions with a redraw of top qualifiers for the main events.

With only this Saturday and the Aug. 15 programs remaining in the battle for the track championships, 25 show-up points will be awarded Wednesday to track regulars attempting to qualify. Full points will be awarded on the Saturday night programs.

Championship night, Aug. 15, will feature all the regular weekly divisions, plus the Mohawk Valley Vintage Dirt Modified Racing Series.

Heading into August, defending modified track champions Rocky Warner has not posted a feature win at Fonda Speedway yet this season but has been consistent enough to lead Mike Maresca in the point standings, 229-219 with Matt DeLorenzo just four points back with 215. Stewart Friesen, who has five feature wins this season at the Track of Champions, is fourth with 205 and Josh Hohenforst is fifth with 203.

Chad Edwards leads Joe Williams in the sportsman standings 253-227 with JaMike Sowle third with 221 points.

Six points separate Dylan Eldred, Brett Mortensen, and Johnny Young in the limited sportsman standings, while Nick Stone leads the pro stock division with 236 points with defending track champion Luke Horning and Josh Coonradt deadlocked in second with 212 points apiece.

Dave Horning Sr. leads defending division champion Jason Samrov by six points, 216-210, in the street stock standings, while Ken Hollenbeck and Zach McSpirit are separated by eight points, 168-160 in the four-cylinder cruiser division.
