FONDA — The Fonda-Fultonville Lady Braves played host to the Berne-Knox-Westerlo Bulldogs Friday night in a clash between division leaders in the Western Athletic Conference.

After trailing early, the Lady Braves got on track and rolled to a 59-34 victory to stay unbeaten in league play.

“We’ve been talking all year about playing 32 minutes and I think we did that,” Fonda-Fultonville Head Coach Flip Boshart said. “I thought we played really hard tonight and we executed well.”

The Bulldogs took advantage of some Lady Braves mistakes and jumped out to a quick lead when Reagan Smith made a lay-up and Taylor Meacham scored and was fouled. She made the free throw and the Bulldogs led 5 – 0.

Carly Atty drained a 3-pointer and Coach Boshart immediately called a time out.

“That time out was just a ‘get right’ thing,” Boshart said. “We had made a couple of turnovers and some other little things. We just needed to ‘clean it up’.”

After the time out, the Lady Braves responded with a basket and a free throw from Lyndsay Lombardoni and a basket and a 3-pointer from Abby Lombardoni to complete an 11-0 run and hold the Bulldogs scoreless for over five minutes.

Alexis Wright ended the Bulldog scoreless streak with a foul shot at the 2:27 mark.

Abby Lombardoni added another 3-point basket before Wright got the ball down low and scored to make it 14- 8 at the end of the first quarter.

Berne-Knox-Westerlo started the second quarter with a basket and a free throw from Wright to cut the lead to three.

The two teams traded baskets as Lyndsay Lombardoni scored for Fonda-Fultonville and Wright answered with a fast break basket.

Avery Cusack made a foul shot and a minute later Marilyn Whitcavitch nailed a 3-pointer from the corner putting her team up by seven.

Wright managed a steal and drove the length of the court to lay it in for the Bulldogs but Lyndsay Lombardoni put back a rebound and Atty hit a quick 3-pointer to extend the Lady Braves lead to 10 with two minutes remaining in the half.

The Bulldogs got baskets from Smith and Grace Tymchyn, while Lyndsay Lombardoni added a free throw and Whitcavitch scored down low to send the Lady Braves into the locker room with a 28-19 lead.

Fonda-Fultonville carried their momentum into the third quarter as they outscored the Bulldogs 16-9.

Meacham got Berne-Knox-Westerlo on the board first with a basket. Atty made a steal and dribbled the full length of the court for a lay-up for the Lady Braves. Wright scored again for the Bulldogs but Abby Lombardoni made a free throw and a 3-pointer and Quincy Lake put back a rebound to help stretch the lead to 13.

A 3-point basket from Wright was answered with back-to-back 3’s from Atty and Kyla Smith and another drive down the lane for a lay-up by Lake.

Wright managed to add another basket for the Bulldogs to close out the scoring in the third period, making the score 44-28.

The Lady Braves continued to run away from the Bulldogs in the fourth quarter.

Wright scored first again for Berne-Knox-Westerlo but Fonda-Fultonville got another pair of back-to-back 3-pointers from Atty and Cusack.

The Bulldogs got a quick basket from Hailey Lawrence and the Lady Braves responded when Whitcavitch scored and Smith added a pair of free throws to open the lead to a 22-point margin.

Meacham made the final basket for the Bulldogs with 3:37 left in the game, while the Lady Braves ended their scoring with one more 3-point basket from Atty and a 10-foot jumper by Abby Lombardoni to make the final score 59-34.

After the game, coach Boshart was proud of his team’s performance against the Bulldogs.

“Berne-Knox-Westerlo is a great team. They’re state ranked and they’re talented,” he said.

Wright led all scorers in the game with 19 points for the Bulldogs.

The Lady Braves, (14-2 overall, 11-0 WAC), were led by Atty with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, and Abby Lombardoni with 14 points.
