Null wins Eastern States 160-pound championship

LOCH SHELDRAKE — Jacob Null brought home the 160-pound championship from the Eastern State Classic wrestling tournament Saturday at Sullivan County Community College.

The Dolgeville/Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville wrestler decisioned Brevin Cassella of Nashoba, Massachusetts High School 3-2 in the championship match.

Null pinned Pawling’s Mason Watkins in 1:03 in his opening match before scoring a 13-5 major decision over Shenendehowa’s Colden Dorfman and decisioning Gaven Bell of Cold Spring Harbor 9-4 to reach the championship match.

Amsterdam’s Jacob Garcia posted a 2-2 record in the 145-pound division at the tournament with pins over Pleasantville’s Michael Balducci and Yorktown’s Dean Patierno, while falling to Islip’s Franic Whitehouse and Commack’s Mike Waxman.

The Rams’ Renso Montalvo also went 2-2 on the day at 120-pounds.

Montalvo pinned Niagara Wheatfield’s Collin Coughenour and Wallkill’s Matt Davis, while falling by decision to Bayport-Blue Point’s Joe Sparacio and Shenendehowa’s Joey Scheeren.

Nick Rodecker also picked up a win for Amsterdam, decisioning Shaker’s Tyler Straton before falling to Brookly Tech’s Jack Reusing and Bay Shore’s Keon Ayala.

Carlos Montalvo, Eladio Montalvo and Christian Robinson also participated in the prestigious tournament.

Shenendehowa won the Eastern States Classic team championship with 88.5 points, while Norwich was second with 61.5. Dolgeville/Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville tied for 40th out of 174 schools represented in the tournament with 27 points, while Amsterdam placed 82nd with 15.

Red Devil Invitational

VERNON — The Dolgeville-Oppenhiem-Ephratah/St. Johnsville placed sixth and Galway was 17th at the annual Red Devil Wrestling Invitational Saturday at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.

Galway’s Brandon Grupe led the local finishers with his second-place finish in the 126-pound weight vlass. Grupe was pinned bty Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Kyle Burback at the 2:45 mark of the championship match.

Dolgeville’s Ethan Randall and John Monk placed third at 170 and 285-pounds respectively, while Kyle Getman finished fourth at 182.

Nathen Randall (106) and Jon Costanza (220) finished fifth for DOESJ, while Treay Jaquay finished sixth at 126 pounds.

Fulton took home the team championship with 168 points, while Windsor placed second with 165.
