GLOVERSVILLE — A quick start and strong finish lifted the Gloversville boys basketball team to a season-opening victory over Scotia-Glenville in a Foothills Council boys basketball contest Tuesday at Gloversville High School.

The Dragons led 19-2 after one quarter and closed the game by outscoring the Tartans by a 21-10 margin in the fourth quarter on their way to a 72-42 win.

“I’m really happy with our start tonight,” Gloversville coach Aric Kucel said. “We came out ready to play.

Dante Bouchard scored 24 points to lead Gloversville, while Joseph Rowback added 20 points. Kayden Ruggeri and Anderson Jones each had eight points for the Dragons.

Antonio Cianfarani scored 21 points to lead Scotia-Glenville, while Robert Barrera added eight points.

After their quick first-quarter start, the Dragons took a 19-2 lead into the second quarter and held a 33-17 advantage at the half.

In the second half, the Tartans closed to within 11 points midway through the third quarter as they chipped away at the Gloversville advantage. The Dragons regrouped to close the quarter with a 12-4 surge to take a 51-32 lead.

“Give credit to Scotia-Glenville. That’s a Mark Sausville team. They’re never going to quit and they’re going to battle the whole way,” Kucel said. “I think the world of him.”

Gloversville finished the game like it started it closing the contest with a 14-3 run over the final four minutes to make the final score 72-42.

“This was a learning lesson for us,” Kucel said. “We’ve got to play a full 32 minutes and not let teams hang around.”
