Several swimmers advance to finals

CLIFTON PARK — Gloversville-Mayfield’s Mariana Benvenuto posted the fifth-fastest time in the 100-yard butterfly in the preliminaries of the Section II Division 2 Girls Swimming and Diving Championships at Shenendehowa High School on Friday.

Benvenuto posted a time of 1:01.55 to qualify for today’s finals.

Benvenuto (2:27.46) also was 11th in the 200 individual medley.

Fonda-Johnstown’s Scout Huckans (1:08.46) was 13th in the 100 butterfly, Gloversville’s Mayfield’s Sophey Willis (1:14.91) was 21st and Gloversville-Mayfield’s Abigail Seltzer (1:19.01) was 23rd.

Huckans also posted a time of 1:06.70 to place eighth in the 100 backstroke prelims.

“Fonda-Johnstown had two relays make A finals which was expected. We had three swimmers qualify to swim in finals for individual events and improved their times which is fantastic,” Fonda-Johnstown coach Ken Hoefs said. “All the girls swam well at prelims and they are ready to swim their best times of the season at finals.”

In the 100 freestyle, Fonda-Johnstown’s Julia Norris (1:02.79) was 17th, Fonda-Johnstown’s Angelina Atwood (1:03.41) was 19th, Gloversville-Mayfield’s Miracle Conyne (1:06.04) was 20th, Amsterdam’s Azia Aldi (1:07.08) was 23rd, Gloversville-Mayfield’s Finley Ebersole (1:07.96) was 25th, Gloversville-Mayfield’s Nature Conyne (1:08.31) was 26th, Gloversville-Mayfield’s Sydney Yates (1:09.37) was 28th, Fonda-Johnstown’s Jenna Weaver (1:09.74) was 30th and Fonda-Johnstown’s Emma VanGorder (1:09.96) was 31st.

Atwood (27.70) also was 13th in the 50 freestyle.

In the 100 backstroke, Norris (1:16.14) was 20th, Yates (1:16.71) was 21st, Amsterdam’s Ferneidy Dotel (1:17.26) was 23rd, Seltzer (1:25.79) was 28th and Miracle Conyne was disqualified.

In the 200 freestyle, Fonda-Johnstown’s Abigail Rizzo (2:21.34) was 18th, Dotel (2:26.08) was 21st and Aldi (2:29.78) was 23rd.

Rizzo also was 14th in the 500 freestyle with a time of 6:23.39.

In the 200 freestyle relay, Fonda-Johnstown was seventh as the team of VanGorder, Weaver, Atwood and Rizzo posted a time of 2:03.29. Gloversville-Mayfield’s team of Seltzer, Ebersole, Nature Conyne and Willis was eighth with a time of 2:06.46, while Amsterdam was 10th as the team of Dotel, Nathaley Edwards, Lavender Watkins and Aldi posted a time of 2:14.73.

Fonda-Johnstown’s team of Atwood, Norris, Rizzo and Huckans posted a time of 4:22.22 to place eighth in the 400 freestyle relay prelims. Gloversville-Mayfield’s team of Miracle Conyne, Ebersole, Benvenuto and Yates was ninth with a time of 4:26.10.

In the 200 medley relay, Gloversville was eighth with a time of 2:05.21, while Fonda-Johnstown was ninth. Amsterdam did not enter a team in the event.

Gloversville’s team of Yates, Miracle Conyne, Benvenuto and Ebersole posted a time of 2:11.10, while Fonda-Johnstown’s team of Norris, Calyer Fagan, Huckans and Delaney Grady finished with a time of 2:21.83.

There were no local competitors in the 1-meter diving or 100-yard breaststroke events. The 1-meter diving competition took place Thursday.

The top eight times in each event will compete in the A final today, while those finishing ninth through 16th in the prelims will compete in the B final today.

The meet concludes today with the swim finals in Division 1 and 2. The Division 2 finals are set for begin at 10 a.m., followed by the Division 1 finals at 3 p.m.
