Lovelass tops field at sectionals

MECHANICVILLE — Galway senior Josh Lovelass carded a 3-over par round of 75 for the top score in the Section II Class C/D Tournament at the Fairways of Halfmoon.

Hoosick Falls won the Class C/D team title with a total of 252. Duanesburg was second with a total of 280, while Schoharie and Tamarac tied for third with totals of 294.

Hoosick Falls’ Mathew Smith was second in the Class C/D tourney with a round of 78, while Hoosick Falls’ Ryan Bloomer was third with a 79. Greenville’s Trey Smith was fourth with an 82 and Taconic Hills’ Madison Bentley was fifth with an 83. A total of 12 golfers advanced to next week’s Class A-B-C-D tourney

Fort Plain’s Taylor Gifford placed 15th with a round of 91, while Canajoharie’s Jack Krug was 19th with a round of 97. Galway’s Matt Smith tied for 27th with a round of 102.

In the Class B Tournament, Ichabod Crane won the team title by a 366-387 margin over Broadalbin-Perth. They were the only two complete teams in the event.

Hudson Falls’ Ben Swartz and Ichabod Crane’s Trevor Wolfe tied for the low round of 81 in the Class B tourney.

Glens Falls’ Brayden Dock was third with an 83, Ichabod Crane’s Tismark Boham was fourth with a 91 and Hudson Falls’ Eric Purdy was fifth with a 92. They are the only five Class B golfers to advance to next week’s Class A-B-C-D tournament.

Broadalbin-Perth’s Matt Danise was sixth with a 93, while Stuart Bond was eighth with a 96. B-P’s Connor Canale and Jake Terwiliger tied for 10th with rounds of 99, and Brandon Miller was 14th with a 104

Johnstown’s Will Gerlach finished 16th a round of 116.

The top 25 percent and ties in each tournament advanced to the A-B-C-D state qualifier Tuesday at Orchard Creek.

Lovelass was the only local golfer to advance.

The Class A tournament will take place Thursday at the Fairways of Halfmoon, while the Section II girls tournament is set for Friday.
