H.S. Volleyball Roundup: Fonda-Fultonville gets past Bishop Gibbons in season opener

SCHENECTADY — Marilyn Whitcavitch finished with 10 kills, 10 blocks and two aces to power Fonda-Fultonville to a 3-1 victory over Notre Dame-Bishop Gibbons in a Western Athletic Conference volleyball match Tuesday.

The Lady Braves won by scores of 25-16, 23-25, 25-18 and 25-20.

Julia Bagnardi had 33 assists, three blocks and three aces for FFCS (1-0 overall, 1-0 WAC), while Krystal McSpirit had seven blocks, six kills and two aces.

Abby Verhayden had 28 digs to lead Bishop Gibbons (1-1 overall, 0-1 WAC), while Abby Hamilton had eight kills.

Alexis Bye finished with 16 assists for the Golden Knights and Marissa Correra added 14 digs.

Fonda-Fultonville is scheduled to host Berne-Knox-Westerlo on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Bishop Gibbons is scheduled to host Schoharie on Thursday at 6 p.m.

OESJ 3, Schoharie 2

ST. JOHNSVILLE — Mackenzie Smith finished with nine assists, eight digs,five aces, five kills and two blocks to a WAC victory over Schoharie.

The Lady Wolves won by scores of 25-20, 18-25, 25-22, 11-25 and 25-23.

Kenidee Oare posted seven assists, six kills, five blocks and three aces for OESJ (1-0 overall, 1-0 WAC), while Kaydence Souza had 11 digs, eight assists and five aces.

Alyssa Vangasbeck registered 27 service points and seven aces for Schoharie, while Bridget Cipperly had five kills. Racquel Gerstenberger added 11 aces and five kills for the Lady Indians.

Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville is slated to host Canajoharie-Fort Plain on Thursday at 6 p.m.

Middleburgh 3, Mayfield 2

MIDDLEBURGH — Jordan Rivenburg finished with 20 service points, seven aces and six kills for Mayfield in a WAC loss at Middleburgh.

The Knights won by scores of 21-25, 28-26, 25-20, 22-25 and 25-22.

Lila King had 13 assists and seven points for Mayfield (0-1 overall, 0-1 WAC), while Deandra Myers posted 14 kills and two digs.

Morgan Mraz registered eight points for the Panthers, Megan Dion had seven points and two digs, Tori Ruliffson notched five kills and two blocks, and Alissa Wilbur added four kills.

Mayfield is scheduled to host Johnstown in a non-league contest Friday at 6 p.m.

Galway 3, Canajoharie-Fort Plain 0

FORT PLAIN — Julia Reedy finished with eight kills and two aces to lead Galway to a WAC victory over Canajoharie-Fort Plain.

The Golden Eagles won by scores of 25-16, 25-12 and 25-19.

Amber Kolpakas finished with 11 points, 10 digs and seven kills for Galway (1-0 overall, 1-0 WAC), Hannah Hoffman had 15 assists and nine service points, and Anna Gardner posted seven kills. Katy Kurtzner recorded 15 digs and five kills for the Golden Eagles and Kylee Decker added 11 assists.

Sydney Shepard had six service points, five kills, five digs, three aces and three assists for Canajoharie-Fort Plain (1-1 overall, 0-1 WAC), while Lauren Weinberger posted eight points, five assists, five digs and three kills.

McKayla Hayner registered six points, five digs, two aces and one block for Canajoharie-Fort Plain, Olivia Kennedy had 11 digs and Bella Page added five digs.

Galway is off until Sept. 18 when it is slated to host Schoharie at 6 p.m.

Canajoharie-Fort Plain is slated to travel to Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville on Thursday for a 6 p.m. contest.

Mekeel Christian 3, Berne-Knox-Westerlo 0

SCOTIA — Chloe Ekstein finished with seven service points, five assists, three aces and two kills to lead Mekeel Christian Academy to a WAC victory over Berne-Knox-Westerlo.

The Lions won by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-23.

Amelia Armao posted 10 service points and four aces for Mekeel Christian, Micaela Hagler had six points, two aces and two kills, and Ashley DiCarlo posted 12 points and an ace.

Mekeel Christian is scheduled to host Middleburgh on Thursday at 6 p.m., while Berne-Knox-Westerlo is slated to travel to Fonda-Fultonville on Thursday at 6 p.m.
