Fo-Jo tops Amsterdam in opener

AMSTERDAM — Fonda-Johnstown won eight of 10 events to post a 54-46 victory over Amsterdam in a girls swim meet at Lynch Literacy Academy on Tuesday.

“We enjoy competing against the Amsterdam Sea Rams because coach [Nancy] Spagnola always has the team ready and it is a competitive meet,” Fonda-Johnstown coach Ken Hoefs said.

Scout Huckans (50-yard freestyle, 100 butterfly), Abigail Rizzo (200 freestyle, 100 freestyle) and Julia Norris (200 individual medley, 100 backstroke) each won two individual events for Fo-Jo.

“Winning our first meet against rival Amsterdam is a great way to begin the season,” said Rizzo, who is a senior captain.

Jenna Weaver won the 100 breaststroke for Fonda-Johnstown.

In the 200 medley relay, Norris, Weaver, Huckans and Angelina Atwood won with a time of 2:24.41.

Four Fonda-Johnstown swimmers (Atwood, Huckans, Norris, Rizzo) qualified to compete in individual events at sectionals.

“We are always motivated to swim fast against Amsterdam and it showed with four swimmers qualifying for sectionals,” said Norris, who is a senior captain.

Amsterdam posted wins in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the team of Allison Demitraszek, Ferneidy Dotel, Nathaley Edwards and Azia Aldi won with a time of 2:44.96.

The same quarter won the 400 freestyle relay after posting a time of 6:43.40.

The 1-meter diving event was not contested and both competitors in the 500 freestyle were disqualified.
