Big night for area riders at Royal Mountain

CAROGA LAKE — Several area riders were among the winners on Thursday as Royal Mountain Ski Area hosted its Monster Energy Supercross event.

Originally slated for Wednesday, wet weather pushed the racing card to Thursday.

Fonda’s Carter Petersen, Johnstown’s Brandon Handy, Gloversville’s Anthony Attigliato, Johnstown’s Kyle Pollak, Gloversville’s Salvatore Attigliato, Fonda’s Timothy Wilmot, Johnstown’s Maxx Miller, Fonda’s Charles Rose, Mayfield’s Jordan Miller, St. Johnsville’s Burton Wilson, Gloversville’s Tyler Covey and Gloversville’s Anthony Covey all claimed wins Thursday.

Petersen won the 122-125 two-stroke and schoolboy classes, while Handy won the 122-250 amateur class and was second in the 122-open amateur class.

Pollak won the 122-250 expert class and was second in the 122-open expert class.

Anthony Attigliato won the 122-250 novice class, while Gloversville’s Salvatore Attigliato won the 122-open amateur class.

Wilmot won the junior mini 9- to 11-year-old class and was fifth in the open mini 10- to 16-year-old class, while Maxx Miller won the mini 60 7- to 11-year-old class and was third in the junior mini 9- to 11-year-old class.

Fonda’s Charles Rose won the open mini 10- to 16-year-old class and was fifth in the 122-250 novice class.

Jordan Miller won the pit bike class and was second in the quad schoolboy class, and Wilson won the plus-30 expert class.

Anthony Covey won the quad novice class, while Tyler Covey won the quad schoolboy class.

Other winners included Saugerties’ Michael Lang (122-open expert), Schenectady’s Anthony Manning (122-open novice), Ghent’s Sebastian Witherell (50cc 4-6), East Berne’s Finn Smith (50cc 7-8), Westerlo’s Blake Shaver (mini 80 12-15), Queensbury’s Brydon Broe (mini 80 9-11), New Berlin’s Lucas Etzl (mini quad 50cc), East Berne’s Alissa Duncan (mini quad 51-90cc), Ghent’s Earl Lyon’s plus-30 amateur), Yorkville’s Jamie Nimey (plus-40 amateur) and Troy’s Peter Miller (quad amateur).

Several area riders posted top-five finishes.

Johnstown’s Hayden Zelich was fourth in the 122-125 two-stroke class and Matheu Dettenrieder was fifth. Zelich also was second in the 122-open novice class, Nelliston’s Tyler Dygert was third and Gloversville’s Matthew Telfer was fifth.

Dygert also was fourth in the 122-250 novice class.

In the schoolboy class, Gloversville’s Devin Buyce was second and Dettenrieder was fourth.

Fonda’s Tyler Blowers was second in the 122-250 expert class and third in the 122-open expert class.

Johnstown’s Kip Simonds was third in the 50cc 7-and-8-year-old class, while Gloversville’s Evan Darling was fourth.

In the mini 60 7- to 11-year-old class, Dolgeville’s Jim George was second, Pattersonville’s Eason Baker was third and Simonds was fifth.

Johnstown’s Michael Ward was second in the plus-30 expert class, while Fultonville’s TJ Chicoski was third.

In the plus-40 amateur class, Johnstown’s Tom Hogan was second and Hagaman’s Joe Kulewicz was fifth.

Pattersonville’s Marc Hartje was fourth in the open mini 10- to 16-year-old class.

Johnstown’s Ethan Cornell was second in the mini quad 50cc class and Fonda’s Tyler Miller was fourth.

Gloversville’s Tyler Rizzo was third in the mini quad 51-90cc class and Mayfield’s Chloe Vannostrand was fifth.

Mayfield’s Bruce Miller was third in the pit bike class, Gloversville’s Sean Dufel was second in the plus-30 amateur class, and Broadalbin’s Eithen Salvione was second in the quad novice class.

A field of 97 riders was in attendance Thursday.

Royal Hillclimb

CAROGA LAKE — Royal Mountain Ski Area hosted its Monster Energy 35th annual hillclimb Sunday with many local riders among the 165 entries attempting to ride up the 600-foot course on the Royal slope.

The event was part of the New England Hillclimbers schedule.

Johnstown’s Kip Simonds III won two classes, picking up wins in the micro mini class with a time of 19.150 seconds and the 65cc class with a time of 24.854 seconds.

Oppenheim’s Jim George won the mini junior division with a time of 22.000 seconds.

Josh Randall of Dolgeville won the snowmobile division on a Yamaha with a time of 15.545 seconds, while Salisbury Center’s Daniel Vanolst won the over 25 ATV class with a time of 12.088 seconds. Vanolst also won the open ATV class with a time of 11.616 seconds.

In addition to Simonds and Vanolst, three other riders claimed wins in multiple classes Sunday.

Joel Naples of Lebanon, Maine, won the 200cc and 250cc classes with a time of 11.805 and 11.046 seconds, respectively.

James Green, of Charlton, Mass., posted the fastest time of the day with a 9.174 seconds to win the 450cc division. Green also won the open class with a time of 11.581 seconds.

Nicholas Bleau of Cherry Valley, Mass., won the four-stroke class and the two-stroke class.

Other winners included Berne’s Trevor Stempel (mini senior); Cobleskill’s Joe Edwards (125cc); Valatie’s Tim Johnson (vintage); Cazenovia’s Mickey Nowak (super senior); Jacob Sorenson of Brimfield, Mass., won the 600cc class; Justin Linde of Charlton, Mass., won the senior class; Samantha Welch of South Glastonbury, Conn., won the women’s class; and Chris Chartier of Spencer, Mass., won the stock wheelbase class.

Several area riders posted top-five finishes.

Johnstown’s Hayden Zelich of Johnstown was third in the 125cc class with a time of 13.792 seconds and third in the 200cc class with a time of 12.942 seconds.

Fort Plain’s Kyle Oertel was second in the 200cc division with his time of 12.568 seconds and Oppenheim’s James Oeser (13.071) was fourth. Johnstown’s Casey Battisti was second in the stock wheelbase class with a time of 10.972 seconds. Oeser also was fourth in the over 25 ATV class with a time of 14.999 seconds, while Gloversville’s Stanley Barnes was fourth with a time of 17.099 seconds.

Mayfield’s B.J. Smith was third in the four-stroke class with a time of 9.999 seconds. Smith also was fifth in the 450cc class with a time of 9.881 seconds.

Ephratah’s Carson Hill was third in the micro mini class with a distance of 442 feet, while Ephratah’s Lonnie Smith was third in the mini senior class with a distance of 420 feet.

In the open ATV class, Oeser was third with a time of 14.632 seconds, Salisbury Center’s Sabbith Vanolst (15.973) was fourth and Canajoharie’s Tyler Larsen (17.194) was fifth.

Ephratah’s Curtis Hill was third in the sled class with a time of 18.167 seconds, while Oppenheim’s Brandon Smith (26.407) was fifth.
