Tavolaro, Opalka compete for Sage

HOUGHTON — The Sage Colleges’ men’s and women’s outdoor track and field teams wrapped action on Saturday afternoon at the 2019 Empire 8 Track and Field Championships on the campus of Houghton College. The two-day event saw Stevens Institute of Technology win both the women’s and the men’s team titles. Stevens women racked up 189 points just ahead of St. John Fisher College which had 144 points. Sage’s women’s team added four points and finished in eighth place. Stevens won the men’s crows by outdistancing the competition with 231 points, while Sage picked up seventh place in the team race.

Senior co-captains Victoria Opalka (Broadalbin-Perth) was 14th in the 1,500 meter run for Sage with a time of 5:28.18.

Junior Joanna Tavolaro (Broadalbin-Perth) was eighth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.19

The Gators took sixth in the 4 x 100 relay in a time of 57.00 seconds as Tavolaro, Sevi Travis (Shaker), rookie Shanice Dominick (Automotive) and Nicole Collazo (Repertory Company HS for the Theatre Arts) ran the race. In the 4 x 400 relay, the Gators were eighth with a time of 4:40.25 as Travis ran the leadoff leg, followed by Collazo, Leggett, and Opalka.
