H.S. Softball Roundup: Lathers, Bowerman lead Canajoharie to first-round win over Maple Hill

SCHODACK — Alexz Lathers and Mackenzie Bowerman each had triples to help 11th-seeded Canajoharie post a 2-1 victory over sixth-seeded Maple Hill in a first-round Section II Class C Tournament contest Friday.

Bowerman also earned the save in the circle, allowing one hit, striking out one and walking none in two innings of work. Jenna Trembley earned the win for the Cougars, striking out five, walking five and allowing two hits in five innings.

Mollie Krug had a single and scored a run for Canajoharie, while Sam Keaney and Trembley each had a single. Kylee Rickard added an RBI for the Cougars.

Elisabeth Brahm had two singles for Maple Hill (8-10 overall), while Jenna Hoffman had a single and scored the lone run. Makaila Maier had an RBI for the Wildcats.

Alyssa Houghtaling took the loss for Maple Hill, striking out 16, walking none and allowing five hits in seven innings.

“I give Canajoharie a lot of credit today. They came all the way here to win a softball game and they were loud, energetic, and created opportunities and took advantage of them,” Maple Hill coach Pat Austin said. “Unfortunately for us, we didn’t take advantage of our opportunities and we were a little sloppy in the field and it cost us. We played hard and gave it our all but it was just not meant to be today.”

Canajoharie (11-7 overall) advances to Tuesday’s quarterfinals to face third-seeded Greenwich.

FP-OESJ 12, Saratoga Catholic 4

FORT PLAIN — Michaela Stockwell pitched a complete-game one-hitter to lead eighth-seeded Fort Plain-Oppenheim-Ephratah/St. Johnsville to a victory over ninth-seeded Saratoga Central Catholic in a first-round Class C Tournament game.

Stockwell struck out 11 in seven innings for FP-OESJ. At the plate, she had a double, two singles and two RBIs.

Jenna Reese had a single, double and three RBIs for FP-OESJ, Fontana LaCoppola had two singles and an RBI, Alexis Mumford had a double and a single, and Bella Page had two singles.

Abby Johnson and Gabby Jenks each had a single and an RBI for FP-OESJ, while Alexis Klock added a single.

Julia Murdick had a single for Saratoga Catholic’s only hit.

FP-OESJ advances to Tuesday’s quarterfinals to face top-seeded Chatham at 4:30 p.m.

HOOSICK FALLS — Ashley Pacheco delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth inning to lift seventh-seeded Hoosick Falls to a victory over 10th-seeded Galway in a first-round Section II Class C contest.

Sophie Estes had the only other hit for Hoosick Falls.

Abby Philpott earned the win in the circle for the Panthers, striking out 11, allowing two hits and hitting one batter in seven innings.

Emma Smith and Amber Kolpakas had singles for Galway.

Hoosick Falls advances to Tuesday’s quarterfinals to face second-seeded Lake George at 4:30 p.m.

Galway finished its season with a 9-9 overall record.

AMSTERDAM — Having taken a 1-0 lead in the first inning before weather halted the game Thursday, Amsterdam picked up where it left off Friday, posting a victory over ninth-seeded Catholic Central in a first-round Class A contest.

Mackenzie Farina had a two-run double in the second innings for Amsterdam, while Nicole DeRose added an RBI single in the third innings.

Shelby LaMont added an RBI single for the eighth-seeded Lady Rams in the first inning Thursday.

Sidney Szczepanik pitched a two-hit shutout for the Lady Rams.

Amsterdam (11-7 overall) advances to Tuesday’s quarterfinals to face top-seeded Ballston Spa at 4:30 p.m.

GLENS FALLS — Emma Chrzanowski struck out seven, walked two and allowed three hits in six innings to lead third-seeded Glens Falls to a victory over 14th-seeded Fonda-Fultonville in a Section II Class B first-round contest.

Steph Meehan had a home run, three singles, four RBIs and scored three runs for the Indians, Lilly Murray had a home run, single, two RBIs and three runs, and Cassidy Harrington had a double, singles and scored two runs. Lexi Cutter had a single, double, three RBIs and scored two runs for Glens Falls, and Felicity Williams had a double, two RBIs and scored a run.

Brianne Egelston had a triple, single and scored a run for Fonda-Fultonville, while Kaylee Egelston had a single and an RBI.

Glens Falls advances to host sixth-seeded Schuylerville in Tuesday’s quarterfinals at 4:30 p.m.

The Black Horses topped 11th-seeded Corinth in their first-round contest Friday, 8-0.

Fonda-Fultonville finished the season with an 8-11 overall record.
