Gloversville’s Bruce reaches quarterfinals
SCHENECTADY — Gloversville’s Damian Bruce reached the quarterfinals of the singles bracket of the Section II Tournament for the second straight year.
In the first round, Bruce topped Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake’s Peter Fulgieri, 8-5, before notching a 10-1 win over Scotia-Glenville’s Keith Ogden in the second round. In the third round, Bruce, the No. 5 seed, posted a 10-0 win over LaSalle’s Victor Ferrando.
Bruce will face Chatham’s Keon Armstrong in today’s quarterfinals at Central Park. The winner of the match will advance to the semifinals and secure a berth in the state tournament on May 30 and June 1. The state tourney takes place at the USTA Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Flushing, which is the site of the U.S. Open.
The top four singles players and top three doubles teams will advance to the state tournament.
Amsterdam’s Nicholas Antonelli lost his lone match, 8-0, to Shenendehowa’s Wesley Poe.
Amsterdam’s Spencer Flint and Philip Johnson lost their first-round match in the doubles tournament by a 9-7 margin to Colonie’s Andrew Wheeler and Jack Connelly.
