Galway volleyball hosts tournament
GALWAY — The Galway volleyball team hosted its first tournament in honor of Folds of Honor on Saturday. All proceeds of the tournament will be donated to the Folds of Honor foundation. Players also wrote letters to soldiers and made care packages for overseas military.
Galway won the tournament. The Golden Eagles went 6-0 in pool play then beat Oppenheim–Ephratah/St. Johnsville in the semifinals, 25-15, 25-11.
Galway played Scotia-Glenville in the finals after the Tartans defeated Catholic Central in their semifinal matchup, 25-19, 24-26, 15-12.
In the championship match, Galway posted a 25-14, 25-16 victory over Scotia-Glenville.
Galway’s Lindsay Zawisa was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, racking up 41 points, 21 aces, 20 digs, 16 kills and one block on the day.
The Golden Eagles also had Hannah Hoffman (34 points, 35 assists, 6 digs, 4 aces), Anna Gardner (16 points, 12 kills, 20 digs, 6 aces, 1 block) and Emma Smith (18 points, 21 assists, 17 kills, 15 digs, 7 aces, 6 blocks) named to the all-tournament team.
Sam Grant added 12 kills and six blocks for Galway, while Katy Kurtzner had 46 digs, 16 points and three aces.
Scotia-Glenville placed Maddie Wright and Miya Bellamy on the all-tourney team.
