Rams spoil Patriots field debut, 9-3

BROADALBIN — The Broadalbin-Perth and Amsterdam baseball teams waited out an hour long weather delay before getting the inaugural varsity game on the Patriots new facility under way Thursday at Broadalbin-Perth High School.

Matt Hinderliter got the first hit on the new field for the Patriots with a lead-off double in the bottom of the first. Brodryk Benton got the first RBI with his RBI single and Jack Sumowski connected for a two-run double to stake Broadalbin-Perth to a 3-0 lead.

Amsterdam tied the game with three runs in the top of the second and grabbed the lead in the third when Peyton Ausfeld double and scored on Jeff Brennan’s RBI single.

The Rams stretched their lead with three runs in the fourth and two more in the top of the fifth to build the 9-3 final.

The Patriots closed out their 2018 Foothills Council campaign with an 8-5 league record, while posting an 11-6 overall mark with a pair of non-league games on tap before entering the Section II Class B tournament.

Amsterdam improved to 10-4 overall and 9-3 in the Foothills Council with a make-up game against Gloversville still to be played on a date yet to be announced.

Fort Plain 11, Mekeel Christian Academy 3

FORT PLAIN — The Fort Plain Hilltoppers improved to 11-2 on the season and gave veteran coach Craig Phillips his 770th career win with a 11-3 victory over Mekeel Christian Academy Thursday at Phillips Field at the Fort Plain Sports Complex.

Bryce Thibodeau struck out nine in six innings of work on the mound for the Hilltoppers and had a single, two RBIs and two runs scored at the plate.

John Cortese added a double, three RBIs and two runs scored, while Jaxson Yacowenia tripled and scored twice. Josh Nellis added a two RBI single in the Hilltoppers five-run second inning.

Fort Plain (11-2 overall, 8-1 WAC) will host Schoharie today.

Dolgeville 9, Westmoreland 3

WESTMORELAND — The Dolgeville Blue Devils bounced back from their loss to West Canada Valley Wednesday to defeat Westmoreland 9-3 in Center State Conference action Thursday at Westmoreland High School.

Riley Nagle picked up the win on the mound for Dolgeville, allowing four hits and striking out five and he helped his cause at the plate with four hits including two doubles to drive in two runs and scored twice.

Devin Gorinshek drew three walks and singled, while scoring twice for the Blue Devils.

Justin Matteson doubled for Westmoreland, while Mike Sweeney struck out eight in six innings of work on the mound for the Bulldogs. Cameron Rothdeiner came in in the seventh and struck out two of the three batters he faced.
