Joan A. Christie MD, age 81, of Gloversville, died Friday, July 112014, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville.
She was born August 12, 1932, in Elizabeth, NJ, the daughter of the late Peter James Christie of Athens, Greece and Jennie Olmstead Palmateer of Edinburg, NY. She received her BA degree from Hunter College of NYC in 1954 and her MD degree from The Medical College of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, in 1959. She worked as a board certified obstetrician and gynecologist with advanced training in gynecological cancer surgery at Memorial Hospital in NYC through 1967.
Dr. Christie was a Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists and had a private practice in Saranac Lake, NY from 1968 to 1970 and in Governier, NY from 1970 to 1975. She practiced at Nathan Littauer Hospital from 1976 to 1986, where she introduced laparoscopy to Gloversville. She was forced to give up her medical practice in 1986 due to Multiple Sclerosis.
She was a diplomate of the National Medical Boards since 1960 and the Board of American Obstetricians & Gynecologists. She was a member of the Marquis Who's Who of American Women, 1981 Edition; the American Medical Association, New York State Medical Society, Fulton County Medical Society, NYS Society of Surgeons, National Women's Medical Association and an affiliate member of the Philadelphia County Medical Society.
Dr. Christie was a member of Sts. Theodoroi Church.
Survivors include her loving partner of 26 years, Christine F. Kennedy; two nephews, Peter James King and Christian John King; six grandnieces and grandnephews, Demi Couleas, David Couleas Jr., Sean King, Peter King Jr., Chris King Jr. and Adam King; and a great-grandniece, Madilyn King.
She was predeceased by her sister, Marion Christie King; and a niece, Joan Couleas.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Fr. Dennis Nagi officiating. Interment will take place at Edinburg Cemetery, Edinburg.
