Eleanor M. Brownell

Eleanor M. Brownell, 90, of Gloversville, N.Y., and Arkell Hall Canajoharie, N.Y., passed away June 20, 2013, at St. Mary's Hospital, Amsterdam, N.Y.

She was born August 26, 1922, in Gloversville, N.Y., the daughter of Fred A. and Gertrude Kobuskie Arnold. She was united in marriage to Harold I. Brownell on November 26, 1938, and he passed away January 19, 1989.

She was a graduate of Gloversville High School and was first employed as a bookkeeper for Pine Brook Golf Club and Knesseth Israel Synagogue.

For many years she served as a home health aide for many local families. Mrs. Brownell was a member of the North Main Street Methodist Church, the Canajoharie Fort Plain Garden Club, was a 4H leader and volunteered for the Mid-County Ambulance Service. She was instrumental in forming the Home Bureau of Fulton County.

Her passions were her family and gardening. She loved attending her grandchildrens' sports and school activities. Mrs. Brownell is survived by her daughters, Frances Lawrence (Ronald) Hopkins of Amsterdam, N.Y., Carol (David) McGrattan of Johnstown, N.Y., Martha B. Nichols of Zephyrhills, Fla. and three sons, Fritz (Donna) Brownell of Johnstown, N.Y., John (Mary) Brownell of Thousand Islands, N.Y., and David (Nikola) Brownell of Loudonville, N.Y. She also is survived by her sisters, Marie Wilson, Barbara vonKreuter Adams, Elizabeth Hughes, 16 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was pre-deceased by a daughter, Rose Mary Brownell, her sons-in-law, David Nichols and James Lawrence, a sister, Martha Dorothy Patterson and two brothers, Fred Arnold, Jr. and Richard A. Arnold.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Ehle Funeral Home, 15 N. William St., Johnstown, N.Y. A service of Resurrection will be held 10 a.m. Monday at St. John's Episcopal Church, Johnstown, N.Y. Interment will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville, N.Y. Memorial contributions may be made to Community Hospice of Amsterdam, N.Y.
