Mr. James Martin Jr., 83 years old, of Country Club Lane, Fort Johnson, died Wednesday at St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Martin was born June 16, 1930, in Schenectady, the son of James and Angeline Mazzucco Martin Sr. He had resided in the Amsterdam area since 1948. Mr. Martin was a graduate of Wilbur H. Lynch High School, attained his B.A. Degree from Clarkson University and attended Albany Law School. He served his country with the U.S. Navy. He was president of Martin & Holloway Inc. in Gloversville and Martin & Bergen Inc. of Amsterdam. Mr. Martin was an agent for Northwestern Mutual Network and associated with the Million Dollar Roundtable for 28 years. Only two percent of agents worldwide achieve this level. He achieved 26 years of National Quality Work.
Mr. Martin was a communicant of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society. He was a member and past president of St. Mary's Hospital Board of Directors and of the Foundation of St. Mary's Hospital. Mr. Martin was the recipient of the Foundation's first Celebration of Healthcare Excellence Award in 1997 for community volunteer. He was recognized for his commitment to the advancement of healthcare and quality of life in Fulton and Montgomery Counties. Mr. Martin also received the Carondelet Medal of The Foundation of St. Mary's Hospital. He was proud of the Capital Campaign he ran in 1993 for the outpatient center.
Mr. Martin has been active in many community organizations including: Past President and Paul Harris Fellow of Amsterdam Rotary Club, Bishop Scully Board of Education, Vice President of Fulton Co. Insurance Association, Board of Automobile Association of America (AAA) for 28 years, President of Amsterdam High School Football Booster Club, Director of former Fulton Co. Bank and the Advisory Board of NBT Bank.
He is survived by his wife, the former Monica Minogue, whom he married April 10, 1955. Also surviving are his sons, James Michael Martin and his wife, Carol of Amsterdam, Daniel G. Martin of Boynton Beach, Florida and Timothy Martin of Lake Worth, Florida; his daughters, Kelli Martin of Saratoga and Nora E. Jacoby of Boca Raton, Florida; his grandchildren, Zoe Jacoby, "the triplets" Olivia, Julia and Sophia Martin, nieces, nephews, cousins and Jim's many dear friends.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Saturday at 9:15 a.m. at St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church and burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery. The family will receive relatives and friends on Friday from 4 until 7 p.m. at Betz, Rossi & Bellinger Family Funeral Home, 171 Guy Park Avenue, Amsterdam.
