CAROGA LAKE - A Memorial Day Weekend tradition will continue Saturday and May 26 at Royal Mountain.

For the 32nd consecutive season, Royal Mountain Ski Center will welcome riders to its slopes for two days of Monster Motocross competition.

"We have quite a few track changes this year . . . good ones, I think," Royal Mountain owner Jim Blaise said. "We put over 500 yards of new fill on the track and resurfaced most of it and built some new jumps. Now we are looking for some good weather again this year and for it to continue throughout the season."

Signups for the events Saturday and May 26 will be from 7 to 9 p.m. the night before the event and 7 to 9 a.m. on race day. The track will be open for practice at 8:30 a.m. Racers must have wristbands on a wrist at sign-up.

"Last year, we changed the turn at the top of the hill and put in a downhill and took out the 'tabletop' on the upper end and replaced it with a smaller jump," Blaise said. "We have continued to make upgrades to make the track safer, while still challenging the riders this year."

The seven-time Central New York Motocross Riders Association track of the year will host six daytime races. After this weekend, the riders will return to the mountain for CNYMRA-points races June 23 (double points), July 6 and 7 and Aug. 18, as well as the annual hill climb July 21.

Monster Energy Drink returns as the major sponsor for the weekend events as well as the supercross races Wednesday nights.

The supercross season opens under the lights at 7 p.m. June 12 and features 18 divisions of racing: 50cc (4-6 years); 50cc (7-8 years); Mini 65cc; Junior Mini (9-11 years, 65cc or 85cc bikes allowed); 85cc (12-15 years); Big-Wheel 80-plus (10-15 years); Plus-30 Expert; Plus-30 Amateur; 250 Novice (122-250, 2 or 4 stroke); 250 Amateur (122-250, 2 or 4 stroke); 250 Expert (122-250, 2 or 4 stroke); Open Novice (122-250, 2 or 4 stroke); Open Amateur (122-250, 2 or 4 stroke); Open Expert (122-250, 2 or 4 stroke); Quad Novice; Quad Amateur; Quad Expert and Mini Quads.

Classes larger than 24 riders will be split for qualifying and last chance qualifiers will be run.

The supercross track featured upgraded lighting last season, and the lighting has been upgraded again to provide an enjoyable atmosphere for racing and watching the premiere riders in the district battle head-to-head over the twisting half-mile course.

The supercross season is scheduled to conclude Aug. 28. Free Wi-Fi also will be available at Royal Mountain this season.
