County receives grant for recycling program

JOHNSTOWN - The Fulton County Department of Solid Waste has received a $125,000 state recycling education grant.

Officials said the grant brings the department's grant awards over the $3 million mark.

Department Director Jeff Bouchard said his department received the $125,000 grant March 12. He said the county received half of a $250,000 request.

"This brings our total grants to over $3 million," he said. "That's good news. We did receive that check."

Bouchard said county Recycling Coordinator Dianne Woske administered the grant, which will pay for salaries, advertisements and educational outreach in the county Recycling Division.

In other news:

Bouchard said a county landfill Local Solid Waste Management Plan compliance report was submitted to the state Department of Environmental Conservation. He said the report is due every other year.

Bouchard said three spring cleanup programs are scheduled for the city of Johnstown and towns of Perth and Mayfield.

Bouchard attended an Organics Training Workshop on March 5 and 6 in Syracuse and gave a presentation about the Fulton County Landfill, he said.

"It was quite interesting and we got a lot of feedback," he said.

- Bouchard said department Environmental Technician Josh Brown attended contractor erosion and sediment control training in Oneonta on March 6 and earned a certification.

- Bouchard said the Hamilton-Fulton-Montgomery Board of Cooperative Education Services will make a couple of sheds for the Department of Solid Waste.

An electronics shed has been placed at the Ephratah Transfer Station, he said.

- A government surplus tractor truck the department owns is being painted, Bouchard said.

- Bouchard reported his department will review hours of operation at the Oppenheim Transfer Station and come back with recommendations.
