Several area winter sports teams earn high school scholar-athlete honors

A total of 17 area winter sports teams were among those honored by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association as scholar-athlete team award winners.

To earn the honors, a team needed to achieve an academic average of 90 or greater in classes during the winter sports season.

This year marks the 22nd year the NYSPHSAA has honored teams with the award.

Johnstown, Fonda-Fultonville, Dolgeville and Gloversville led the way among area schools as each had three teams earn scholar-athlete team awards from the NYSPHSAA.

Johnstown had its girls skiing (96.329), girls basketball (94.343) and boys skiing (92.700) teams earn awards.

The Johnstown girls posted an 11-9 overall record on the court this season, losing to Tamarac in the Section II Class B quarterfinals.

The Fonda-Fultonville boys indoor track team posted the third-highest team grade point average among Section II indoor track teams with its 96.723 GPA. Only Colonie (97.404) and Shaker (97.181) finished ahead of the Braves.

The Fonda-Fultonville girls indoor track (94.894) and girls basketball (93.846) teams also earned scholar-athlete team awards.

The FFCS indoor track teams both finished second at the Section II Division IV Championships, while the girls basketball team posted a 9-11 overall record this season.

Gloversville had its boys and girls indoor track teams honored after they posted team GPA's of 91.123 and 91.933, respectively. The Gloversville boys basketball team also earned a scholar-athlete team award after posting a team GPA of 91.063.

Dolgeville also had three of its winter teams earn scholar-athlete team awards.

The Blue Devil wrestling team posted a 92.085 GPA, which ranked fourth among Section III wrestling teams. On the mat, Dolgeville claimed the Section III Class D title.

Also honored were Dolgeville's girls basketball (93.572) and volleyball (92.995) teams. The Dolgeville volleyball team also had success on the court, going 13-6 overall, reaching the Section III Class C-2 final and winning its 18th straight Center State Conference title.

Mayfield had its boys skiing (93.391) and girls basketball (91.869) teams honored. The boys ski team sent Tom McClellan and Mitch Akowicz to the state championship meet this season.

The Wells boys basketball (92.100), Fort Plain boys basketball (92.087) and Amsterdam boys basketball (92.077) teams also earned scholar-athlete team awards from the NYSPHSAA.
