Nordic skiers post solid showings

LAKE GEORGE - Mayfield's Tom McClellan and Lidija Nikollaj both posted fifth-place finishes Thursday at the Shenendehowa/Saratoga Springs Invitational nordic ski race.

McClellan posted a time of 29:07 to finish fifth in the 8k classic technique boys race, while Nikollaj was fifth with a time of 17:42 in the 4k girls classic race.

Saratoga Springs' Brian Halligan won the boys race with a time of 26:51, while Shenendehowa's Austin Huneck (27:07) was second. Queensbury's Ben Anderson (28:13) was third and Saratoga Springs' Seth Mares (28:15) was fourth.

Shenendehowa edged Saratoga Springs by virtue of a tiebreaker to win the boys team title after both teams finished with 19 points after three skiers finishes were totaled. Queensbury (20 points) was third, while Scotia-Glenville (49) was fourth. Mayfield (60) was sixth, while Johnstown was 10th.

Mitch Akowicz finished 17th with a time of 32:50 for Mayfield, Brent Gray (37:34) was 38th and Austin Davis (37:59) was 39th. Devante Marshall (40:31) was 41st for the Panthers.

Eric Brower finished 20th with a time of 33:09 to lead Johnstown, while Cameron Roten (35:28) was 32nd. Jack Brabant (40:14) was 40th for the Sir Bills.

Shenendehowa won the girls team title with a total of 15 points, while Queensbury (21 points) was second. Mayfield (36) was third, Johnstown (90) was eighth and Canajoharie (101) was ninth.

Lake George's Emma Underwood won the girls race with a time of 16:04, while Shenendehowa's Sarah Duclos was second with a time of 16:23.

Emily Cromie (20:02) was 15th for Mayfield, while Sarah Montgomery (20:10) was 16th.

Morgan Swedick led Johnstown, placing 19th with a time of 20:23. Quincey Brabant (22:30) was 35th for the Lady Bills, Kayla Groesbeck (22:55) was 36th, Madison Smrtic (23:36) was 41st and Hannah Chamberlain (24:34) was 42nd.

Catie Corrigan (21:37) paced Canajoharie with a 30th-place finish. Paige Shovelton (22:29) was 34th for the Lady Cougars, while Rosemary Trahan (22:56) was 37th.
