AMSTERDAM- City Controller Ronald G. Wierzbicki died Friday after a brief illness.
Wierzbicki, 75, was elected in November 2011 on the Democratic and Conservative lines. He would have completed his first year in office next week.
"All of City Hall is shocked and saddened by this loss, and our hearts and prayers go out to his wife Jean and their children," Mayor Ann Thane said in a news release. "We will miss him. He was often the last to leave City Hall each day, and it's hard to imagine closing up next week and not seeing him at his desk as usual."
According to the release, Deputy Controller Joy Chiariello will immediately assume day-to-day oversight of the Department of Finance until an interim appointment is made by the Common Council within the next 30 days.
"The loss of our friend and colleague leaves a tender spot in the hearts of all the Democratic Committee as we extend wishes of peace to the Wierzbicki family in their time of healing," Thom Georgia, secretary for the Democratic Committee, said in the release.
