Marie Alta Serge

Mrs. Marie Alta Serge, age 88, formerly of Gloversville, died Monday evening, December 10, 2012, at Nathan Littauer Hospital in Gloversville. She had resided at the Pine View Commons Adult Home in Johnstown for the past three years.

She was born April 26, 1924, in Fort Johnson, N.Y., the daughter of the late Harry and Isabel Tyndale DeVoe.

Marie was dedicated to her family and was a great knitter. She worked for 26 years at Mohasco in Amsterdam and then worked for 30 years at Amsterdam Printing Company. She was well thought of and trusted by her peers.

She climbed 15 mountain peaks in the Adirondacks when she was in her 60s. When she was 66 years old she went back to school for a year and received her GED.

Marie was a member of the former Sacred Heart Church where she was a Eucharistic Minister.

She was married to Carmelo F. Serge, who died December 6, 1985. She was also predeceased by a sister, Beverly McKay; a brother, Harry C. DeVoe; and her special friends, Erma Albini and Robert Adler.

Marie is survived by her son, Carmel J. Serge and his wife, Dawn of Gloversville; two brothers, Clinton DeVoe of Rye, N.Y. and William DeVoe of Amsterdam; a sister, Elaine Cappadonia of Mt. Morris, N.Y.; two granddaughters, Melissa Dunphy (Michael) and Michele Hilmey (Chris); five great-grandchildren, Quinn Dunphy, Elizabeth Dunphy, Josephine Dunphy, Madeleine Hilmey and Nathan Hilmey; as well as several nieces and nephews. Also surviving is her extended family, Amy Romeyn and Vicky Ingalls.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, December 13, at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St., Gloversville, where a prayer service will be conducted at 9:15 a.m. Friday, followed by a Mass of Christian burial at 10 a.m. at the Church of the Holy Spirit, 151 S. Main St., Gloversville. Interment will take place at St. Michael's Cemetery, Amsterdam. Memorial contributions may be made in lieu of flowers to Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Avenue, Gloversville, NY 12078.
