Issues left out of article

December 10, 2012
The Leader Herald

I attended the Oppenheim-Ephratah Central School District board meeting Thursday. After reading The Leader-Herald's story regarding the meeting, I felt compelled to comment personally on certain issues not mentioned in the article. No surprise there.

I had a suggestion for the board about how to save money. This was to eliminate half of a gym teacher's position. Part of a particular gym teacher's duties is to supervise I.S.S. classes (whether students are there or not). There also is a bus driver who substitutes for I.S.S. Why not use the bus driver for the gym teacher's I.S.S. classes, therefore reducing half of the teacher's salary and benefits?

I also requested the school board reconsider its decision to not fill the retiring elementary music teacher's position. The teacher will retire in a few short weeks, and the board will not fill the position even to finish out the school year. What a shame for the students to not be able to finish their school year.

People like to say they are all about the kids. Really?

In closing, I would like to touch on the subject of merger signs. I had expressed my concern at the meeting of signs coming up missing. Whether you are for or against the merger, signs placed on personal property should not be tampered with. It is immoral and illegal. Citizens of this district are adults and should act as such.
