Former supervisor to stand trial today

November 14, 2012
The Leader Herald

AMSTERDAM-A former 5th Ward supervisor will stand trial today in City Court, with Fulton County District Attorney Louise Sira serving as a special prosecutor

Former 5th Ward Supervisor Karl R. Baia was arrested by city police in August 2011 after an alleged incident at 200 Virginia Lane. Baia, 28, was charged with second-degree burglary, a felony, and endangering the welfare of a child and fourth-degree criminal mischief, both misdemeanors.

Police said Baia broke into apartment G-10, the residence of Amsterdam 4th Ward Supervisor Barbara Wheeler, damaging the front door. Baia began yelling at Wheeler and refused to leave, police said.

A physical altercation between Baia and Wheeler took place in front of a young child, police said. Wheeler was able to call 911 and Baia then left, police said.

Sira said she was brought in to serve as a special prosecutor because of Baia's former position as a member of the Board of Supervisors. Sira said she thinks the trial will take about two days.
