Young players deserve varsity football

October 14, 2012
The Leader Herald

I would like to let the people of Johnstown and Gloversville know there is a public "Silence of the Lambs" in Johnstown regarding the early conclusion of the Greater Johnstown?School District's varsity football season. However, there is a lot of discussion going on, including on Facebook.

I haven't been able to walk around the block or go out shopping without being approached by people from the Glove Cities and concerned football fans. There are many who do not want Sir Bill football to die.

Obviously, not having a winning season in 17 consecutive years has hurt when it comes to promoting the program. I am amazed the Board of Education hasn't pulled the plug. There has to be a problem somewhere, and if it isn't resolved, I am afraid the program will end. I am sure there are many school boards that would have either pulled the plug or gotten their problems squared away already. Neither has happened here, but I am hoping for the continuation of a once-great program.

Discussion between parents, coaches, the athletic director, alumni, fans, the Board of Education and all those interested in Sir Bill football is needed. If anyone else has a better idea, fine.

However, foot-dragging will only hurt the chances for success. It is my understanding we have some fine modified and junior varsity ballplayers coming up. I would like to see them get their shot at playing some varsity football. Let's give them that chance.
