JOHNSTOWN - The Fulton County Board of Supervisors' Finance Committee recently approved filling two vacant positions in the county Sheriff's and Probation departments after a required review of the positions.
The committee - through a process approved by the board in 2010 - is required to conduct a vacancy review for county departments. If a department head wants to fill a vacancy, the director must provide justification for retaining the position. The department head also can suggest a plan for eliminating the position.
At a recent Finance Committee meeting at the County Office Building, the Sheriff's Department requested permission to fill a lieutenant position in the county jail due to an extended sick leave of the current lieutenant. The committee voted to fill the position.
Undersheriff Kevin Lenahan said the current lieutenant in the Corrections Division is seeking disability retirement and is currently out on extended sick leave. He said the process could take several months.
Lenahan said his department wishes to promote a sergeant corrections officer to the temporary appointment as a lieutenant. He said this a mandated position essential in the daily operation of the correctional facility.
In another vacancy review, county Probation Director Michael Kirkpatrick noted a board resolution last month created a temporary senior account clerk-legal typist position for training purposes from Dec. 1 to 31. He said current senior account clerk-legal typist Deb Jones is retiring at the end of the year. He requested and received permission to provisionally move a legal typist to the account clerk-legal typist position.
He also received committee permission to hire a temporary legal typist to fill that resulting vacancy.
In another personnel matter, retiring county Information Services Director Tony Basile discussed the "status of his replacement" with the committee in a closed-door executive session. No action followed.
