CANAJOHARIE - The village's Volunteer Fire Department is teaming up with National Fire Protection Association during Fire Prevention Week to urge residents to "have two ways out," a news release said.
Fire Prevention Week started Sunday and runs through Saturday, the release said.
This year's theme focuses on the importance of fire escape planning and practice, the news release said.
The department recommends the following tips for planning an escape from a fire:
Make a map of the home. Mark a door and a window that can be used to get out of every room.
Choose a meeting place outside in front of the home. This is where everyone can meet once they've escaped. People should draw a picture of the outside meeting place on the escape plan, the release said.
Write the emergency telephone number for the fire department on the plan.
Have an adult test the smoke alarm and practice the escape plan with everyone in the home.
Keep the escape plan on the refrigerator and remind grown-ups to have the family practice the plan twice a year or whenever anyone in the home celebrates a birthday.
The department is available for educational information this week to promote planning for a fire and also will have a display at the NBT Bank, 24 Church St., the release said.
For more information, call the department at 673-3812 on Tuesday evenings to learn more about making a plan.
