Defunding Planned Parenthood dumb move

President Trump and Republican leaders in Congress have pledged to defund Planned Parenthood, a nonprofit organization that has been in existence in this country since 1916.

I can’t envision a dumber idea!

Their argument is that Planned Parenthood performs abortions and provides contraceptive advice and products.

Both are true.

Defunding Planned Parenthood will NOT stop abortions from being performed. Abortions, as per Roe v Wade, are legal in the United States.

Much to the credit of the educational programs and contraceptive services of Planned Parenthood, the number of abortions performed have been steadily decreasing.

In 2015, abortions were at a 50-year low. Without Planne Parenthood, as a trusted resource, woman of reproductive age would not have the information needed to help prevent pregnancy and receive other health-care assistance to deal with pregnancy, including those who choose to not have an abortion.

For women who choose to have an abortion, they can proceed with confidence knowing Planned Parenthood can provide it safely and legally.

Of all of its work, only 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s budget is used for the expenses related to performing abortions; that 3 percent is money privately raised.

No federal funds are currently used by Planned Parenthood to pay for expenses related to abortions. (The Hyde Amendment, passed 30 years ago, took care of that by restricting the use of federal funding for abortion services.)

The other 97 percent of Planned Parenthood’s budget, which is supplemented by federal funding, is spent on prevention services and health care for women that contributes to preventing unwanted pregnancy and keeping women healthy. Those are the services that would be defunded!

Planned Parenthood’s nation-wide system of centers also provides birth control advisement, testing for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), and other women’s health services.

In many communities, the Planned Parenthood office is the only trusted and professional community health clinic available to some residents.

Planned Parenthood is the clinic of choice for America’s poor: 40 percent of Planned Parenthood’s patients are on Medicaid and would have no other local access to needed health care and educational services if Planned Parenthood had to close its doors due to defunding.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed action to preserve choice in New York. His proposed budget also reflects a continuing commitment to Planned Parenthood.

President Trump and the Congress should take a cue from New York where choice is a valued option for women, their families, and their doctors. And, where the Planned Parenthood organization is viewed as an integral part of the state’s nonprofit health care network.

Defunding Planned Parenthood will deny quality health care services at the community level for millions of women, many of whom are already the most economically vulnerable.

Included are those who do not have the financial resources or support system to seek the health care and information they need for their reproductive health, including access to safe abortion and contraceptive advice and products.

Planned Parenthood provides the services inherent in its name, so a woman can plan when to become a parent.`

A smart idea!
