The treasurer is very important in Johnstown city government
When I learned Johnstown’s elected treasurer requires no formal training, I imagined a contest between Lassie and Rin Tin Tin with a write-in campaign by Pluto.
The city treasurer is the most important official in city government for he must competently collect taxes and wisely secure bonding while luring funds from the state.
If Johnstown decided to appoint its treasurer, it could require a CPA or comparable background. Pay might be higher but still would be assured.
Fortunately Johnstown has had such a CPA as treasurer. But now he is retiring, leaving that important post open to any ambitious or just unemployed citizen. But is that what the city needs?
