Stanton’s legacy remains important for our area
There is a very interesting and informative article in the August 2020 issue of National Geographic (pp. 100ff), “Women, a Century of Change” that is important to those of us living in this area. On the second page is a splendid photograph of Colin Jenkins, the great-great-granddaughter of Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
Colin has visited Johnstown many times and continues the important fight for women’s rights throughout the world. Elizabeth was born here, was baptized in First Presbyterian Church and studied New Testament Greek with the pastor. The article has several references to Stanton that give valuable insights into her struggles and accomplishments.
They remind us of the valuable work carried on in her name by local women (and men) in the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Hometown Association and urge us all to recommit ourselves to human rights in these troubled times.
The Rev. Earl S. Johnson served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church from 1998 to 2011.
