Biased reporting by the Associated Press

An open letter to the Associated Press:

I am a subscriber to the Leader-Herald, an Ogden News publication, and on Feb. 25, an AP article titled “Trump returns to domestic squabbles on his trip to India” appeared on the front page (see https://www.leaderherald.com/uncategorized/2020/02/trump-returns-to-domestic-squabbles-on-his-trip-to-india/). The article was unsigned.

The last sentence in paragraph three contained a statement from President Trump and I quote, ” ‘ I wanted no help from any country and I haven’t been given help from any country.’ “ In the same sentence his statement was then followed by this statement written by the reporter(s), and I quote, “despite Russia’s well-documented meddling in the 2016 election to help him win.” In fact, there is no credible evidence of any Russian meddling that helped Trump win.

So the reporter(s) offered no more than an opinion that clearly shows anti-Trump bias. Additionally, that the article was unsigned, which undeservedly provided cover for the reporter(s), is cowardly.

The AP is supposed to provide unbiased reporting and in this instance it disgracefully failed to do so. The Leader Herald and its readers deserve better.

Editor’s note: It is the practice of this paper that if an AP article was written by three or more reporters, we do not run a byline.
