School board members make tough choices
The New York State School Boards Association is in the midst of a statewide campaign that highlights the work of school board members and the vitally important work we do.
Nowhere is that more evident than in the annual budget process.
This year, Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed a state tax credit in school districts that stay within their property tax caps. Yet the ability of schools to maintain quality educational programs and stay within the cap depends to a large degree on the amount of aid they receive in the state budget to supplement local property taxes.
As always, school boards will work diligently to put together affordable spending plans that meet the educational needs of our students. The decisions we make aren’t easy ones, and it’s important that members of the community participate in the local school budget process.
We also urge everyone to join NYSSBA in recognizing the important work of school board members by visiting our Facebook page (www.facebook.com/NYSSBA). Here you can find out more about our campaign and celebrate the school board members in your community. Let’s honor these unsung heroes who devote their time and efforts to improving the lives of children in our communities.
After all, school board members are your neighbors.
