Richard Conover Sleezer
Richard Conover Sleezer (Dick), 90, of Wanaque, NJ, formerly of Bellerose Manor, Queens Village, NY, passed peacefully on Jan. 3, 2021, at home after a long illness with family at his bedside. Dick, as family and friends knew him, was born in Johnstown, NY, son of the late Cecil James (Jim) and Esther (Conover) Sleezer. Dick was a graduate of Johnstown High School and proud member of the class of 1948. He worked for Campbell’s Tree Service prior to entering the Army in 1951, and was stationed in Fort Tilden, Queens, NY, and Misawa Air Base, Japan, as a radar operator. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army in 1953, Dick worked at GE in Schenectady until moving to Brooklyn, NY, where he worked for Lynch Trucking Co. In 1958, he went to work at Masback Hardware, Hudson St., NY, and North Bergen, NJ, as a computer operator, programmer/systems analyst and Production Manager until his retirement in 1990.
Dick loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing with his brothers, family vacationing yearly in the Caroga Lake area, and boating and fishing on the Monksville Reservoir in Ringwood, NJ. He was a league bowler for many years and also enjoyed watching his NY Giants football and NY Mets baseball. But what he loved most and was most proud of was his family and his home and could be seen in his yard and garden or doing upkeep on his house and cars and attending events involving his children.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen (Berghoff); his children, Thomas (Marcia) Sleezer, Michael (Christina) Sleezer, Michael (Laura) Lane and Paula Lane; his grandchildren, Brian (Jackie), Linda, Christopher (Paige) and Emily Sleezer, Dylan, Rebecca and Rachel Lane, Daniel Dempsey and family, Jennifer Lathren and family, Amanda Choate and family, William Martin and family, and Ashlee Martin and family; great-granddaughter, Savannah Sleezer; daughter-in-law, Eileen Sleezer; brother, Larry (Marge) Sleezer; sisters-in-law, Sandra Sleezer and Karren (Lou) Palermo; and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by former wife Joan; son, Richard; brothers, Robert, Ralph, James, and Ronald Sleezer; sisters, Dorothy Elmendorf and Carolyn Morris; sisters-in-law, Arlene Sleezer and Sally Sleezer; brother-in-law, Bob Elmendorf; and nephews, Duane Sleezer and Jeffery Powers. In keeping with Dick’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or viewing. A graveside service and interment will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021, at 10 a.m. at the Ferndale Cemetery, Johnstown, NY.
A memorial service at the graveside is planned for family and friends in the spring of 2021. In lieu of flowers, donations in Dick’s memory may be made to the charity of one’s choice. The family would like to thank Vanguard Medical Group, North Haledon, NJ; Chilton Medical Center, Pompton Plains, NJ; and Valley Home Care and Hospice, Paramus, NJ, for their outstanding care and support during Dick’s illness.
Arrangements have been entrusted to D’Agostino Funeral Home, Haskell, NJ.
