John A. Del Savio

John A. Del Savio, 71, of Saratoga Springs, NY, passed away on Friday, November 13, 2020, at his home in Saratoga Springs, NY. John was born July 1, 1949, in Gloversville, NY to the late Salvatore “John” Del Savio and Jennie I. (Handy) Del Savio.

John graduated from Gloversville High School in 1967 and gained experience in different fields before he began his career as a Youth Division Aide at the Tryon Boys and Girls Center in 1975, retiring in 2004.

Mr. Del Savio was a lifelong member of the Pine Tree Rifle Club and The National Rifle Association of America. He also maintained memberships with the Wilton Rod and Gun Club, Wilton, NY, the International Bench Rest Shooters, The Old Saratoga Muzzleloading Club, Inc., Mechanicville, NY and the Western New York Schuetzen Society.

As an avid historian, gunsmith, outdoorsman, angler and marksman, his passion for history and knowledge of the great outdoors also drove his interest for the hunt of historical, local Native American artifacts. John was well known in and beyond his local community as an expert in these fields. His determination and dedication for preservation and advocacy led him into free-lance writing for Precision Shooting Magazine and finally accomplishing another lifelong goal of publishing a book, “Pine Tree Rifle Club of Johnstown, NY A Pictorial History 1937-2014.” From the young age of 8 years old, John took interest in the Pine Tree Rifle Club. He became a lifelong member, broke records, fought for change, created leagues, pushed for upgrades and family involvement and in doing so he led the club to more than triple its membership to the max capacity as it is today. His vision of an on-premises museum began with donations from his own personal collection. Members, along with assistance from John’s daughter, would like to complete this vision and continue to maintain it as John would have wished.

John is survived by his brother, James E. Del Savio (Patty) of Gloversville; his three children, Diane Perkins (Todd) of Gloversville, Michael J. Del Savio (Kirsten) of Wilmington, NC, and Carl A. Del Savio (Megan) of Wilmington, NC; as well as their mother, Rosemarie Janetsky of Fort Johnson, NY. Mr. Del Savio is also survived by his five grandchildren, Amelia, Emma, Collin, Andrew and Connor; as well several cousins, nieces and nephews.

Private arrangements have been made per John’s wishes expressed over the years. The family asks for those wishes to be respected and in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the Pine Tree Rifle Club, Johnstown, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of the William J. Burke & Sons/Bussing & Cunniff Funeral Home, 628 N. Broadway, Saratoga Springs.

The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to all of those who have helped his family through this difficult time. To all of John’s friends who have been there along the way to learn from, inspire and continue a part of the legacy he had always aspired to leave behind, we cannot thank you enough. It is said that he will be terribly missed by so many and he will definitely leave that legacy – he would be humbled but proud. His heart and soul will always be among the forest and in the trees – Bench 20 Out – Online remembrances may be made at www.burkefuneralhome.com.
