Karen Alreta (Olsson) Ostergaard

Karen Alreta (Olsson) Ostergaard of Pequannock Township NJ., passed away on Friday, September 18, 2020, at the age of 80 after an 8-year battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Karen grew up in Gloversville, N.Y. where her Swedish immigrant family worked in the glove-making industry. She went to college at Cortland State Teachers College, Cortland, NY, where she earned a degree in Early Childhood Education. She was selected by the college to be an R.A. dormitory counselor in her junior year. Upon graduation she taught first grade in Vestal, NY for 2 years. She married and moved to NJ, teaching first grade in Bloomfield for four years before starting her family of three daughters.

She met her husband while working summers at a family Bible camp, Camp of The Woods, in Speculator, NY, the Adirondacks, where she taught children’s Bible classes. She continued her love for teaching the Gospel of Christ in a Good News Club in her home for 29 years under Child Evangelism Fellowship. She also assisted Sunday classes for children at The Chapel, Lincoln Park, playing guitar and piano while teaching songs for the children’s ministry. After putting her husband through medical school, she worked as the bookkeeper for the family practice they started in Pompton Plains.

Karen is survived by her loving husband, Paul A. Ostergaard, M.D.; her brother, Karl Olsson, and his wife, Ann; her three daughters: Amy Prisco and her two children; Wendy Rudd and her six children; Cindy Livingstone and her five children.
