Mildred E. Chest

Mildred E. Chest, 96, of Byard Street, Johnstown, passed away Wednesday, February 26, 2020, at Nathan Littauer Hospital, Gloversville surrounded by her loving family.

She was born in the town of Florida on October 10, 1923, a daughter of Clarence and Ethel Hillman Ouderkirk and was educated in the town of Glen. Mildred was a lifelong area resident and lived in St. Johnsville before moving to Johnstown.

Mrs. Chest was employed as a textile dyer at Palatine Dye for several years.

She enjoyed dancing, garage sales, and browsing through Avon books. Most of all, Mildred enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a daughter, Colleen; two brothers, Clarence and David; and three sisters, Shirley, Beatrice, and Carolyn.

Survivors include her children, Cheryl A. Sitterly of Bushnell, FL, Darlene L. Chest of Johnstown, and Lawrence T. Chest (Kristina) of Fultonville; a brother, Robert (Nancy) Ouderkirk of Fort Plain; a sister-in-law, Janet Ouderkirk of Palatine Bridge; thirteen grandchildren, William, Kellie, Tracey, James, Anthony, Geoffrey, Noell, Matthew, Lawrence P., Kara, Courtney, Mackenzie, and Colleen; twenty five great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Cremation was performed at Park View Crematorium, Schenectady. Calling hours will be held on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 and Black Street), Johnstown, followed by a memorial service at 12:15 p.m. with Trustee Linda Eastman. Memorial contributions may be made to the Brennan Memorial Humane Society, in care of the funeral home.
