Mrs. Miller

Nancy D. Miller, age 86, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2019, at the Wells Nursing Home in Johnstown. She was born November 28, 1932, in Johnstown, NY, the daughter of the late Clarence H. and Dorothy E. Jenner Dopp.

Nancy grew up in Johnstown, NY and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1950. She was president of her French club, the pianist for the school concerts and also was a ballet and tap dancer, performing in many recitals. After graduation, she attended Syracuse University and graduated with a BA in English education. She received her graduate degree at SUNY Albany and Russell Sage College where she earned an MA in psychology. Nancy taught high school English for 10 years at Guilderland High School and Mont Pleasant High School, respectively. In 1969 she found employment as secretary to a wildlife pathologist at the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation until 1975. The following year Nancy was hired as the Director of Training for the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets in Albany, NY until she retired, in November of 1990.

Nancy enjoyed writing, skiing, slalom water-skiing, camping, horseback riding, piano, tennis and travel. She traveled frequently to New York City as a child with her parents and twice in the summer, drove to California with her parents, stopping along the way to ride horses in Wyoming. They also visited many parts of Canada, Florida, more of the New England states and Washington, DC. As an adult, she continued to travel the United States with her children, went to Mexico twice and enjoyed two blissful weeks in Greece. Nancy was a wonderful dancer and especially enjoyed the foxtrot and in the 1970s fell in love with disco. She was an animal lover and was especially drawn to dogs and horses.

She was married to the late Phillip Miller, who passed away in 2006. For twenty years Nancy and Phillip shared a happy life living at the home they named “Cream Rises” in the town of Edinburg, NY with their dogs, Farley, Bailey, Jill and Ben. They enjoyed gardening together, watching the birds and other various wildlife outside their door and in the summer liked to have margaritas on the porch! They traveled around the Sacandaga Lake area with Phillip’s sailboat while he participated in regattas.

Nancy is survived by her daughter, Susan Moran of Wethersfield, CT (Martin); her son, Steven Churchill of Wolfeboro Falls, NH (Carol); her grandson, Spencer Churchill (Marisa); and former sister-in-law, Dorothy Churchill (The Villages, FL); former nieces and nephews and cousins.
