Joan Agnes Stanton, 82, of Fonda, NY, died September 2, 2019, at Hillcrest Spring Assisted Living Facility.

Joan was born November 11, 1936, in Gloversville, NY, the daughter of the late John Christopher and Mary Olmstead Christopher.

She graduated from Broadalbin Central School in the class of 1954. Joan was united in marriage to James J. Stanton Jr. on November 7, 1959; they spent 43 years together until his passing on June 9, 2003.Joan Agnes Stanton, 82, of Fonda, NY, died September 2, 2019, at Hillcrest Spring Assisted Living Facility.

Joan was born November 11, 1936, in Gloversville, NY, the daughter of the late John Christopher and Mary Olmstead Christopher.

She graduated from Broadalbin Central School in the class of 1954. Joan was united in marriage to James J. Stanton Jr. on November 7, 1959; they spent 43 years together until his passing on June 9, 2003.

Joan was a devout Christian and 50-year member of the Fonda Reformed Church where she dedicated her time to serving others as a Consistory member, Sunday school teacher, and choir member. She also served the community as a Mountain Valley Hospice volunteer, a Girl Scout leader, and a 4-H leader. Joan was a gifted seamstress and artisan who loved to quilt, sew, smock, and knit, but more than anything she loved spending time with her family.

Joan is survived by her daughters, Martha Stanton of Fonda, NY and Nancy (Michael) Rogers of Mendon, NY; sons, John (Alex) Stanton of Long Beach, CA and Thomas Stanton of San Jose, CA; siblings, Elizabeth Mickel of Gallupville, NY, John “Jack” (Elaine) Christopher of Wayne, ME, and Mary “Molly” VanDerwerken of Lincolnton, NC; as well as grandchildren, Elizabeth Valade, Michael Valade Jr., Andrew Stanton, Benjamin Rogers, and Meredith Rogers. She also leaves behind her longtime companion, Robert Thackrah; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Olmstead Christopher; husband, James J. Stanton Jr.; and son-in-law, Richard L. Sweet.

A service of remembrance will take place on Saturday, September 14, 2019, at 10 a.m. at Fonda Reformed Church, 19 Broadway, Fonda, NY 12068. Interment at Hagaman Mills Cemetery will take place immediately following services. Family and friends are invited and may call on Friday, September 13, 2019, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jackson & Betz Funeral Home, 15 Main St., Fultonville, NY 12072. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Fonda Reformed Church Music Ministry or Mountain Valley Hospice, 108 Steele Ave., Gloversville, NY 12078.
