Joan M. Cangiano
Joan M. Cangiano, 91, formerly of Gloversville, passed away Monday, July 16, 2018, in San Diego, California.
She was born in Gloversville, NY, the youngest child of Guy and Frances (Puorto) Martorelli on July 21, 1926.
Joan was educated in the Gloversville school system and graduated from the local high school in 1944. She furthered her studies in education at the State University at Potsdam, NY and Syracuse University. She returned to Gloversville and joined the school system where she taught school, namely at Park Terrace School and was head teacher for 40 years.
In 1959 she married Vincent Cangiano and they enjoyed 56 years of marriage until his passing in 2015. She was a life-time communicant of the Holy Spirit Church and active in its events and was a member of its Women’s Society. She was a life-time member of the YWCA and served on its Board of Directors and also as a Trustee for many years. She was also a Board Member of the Cancer Society and Heart Society. She was a life-time member of the NEA, New York United Teachers and the Retired Teachers Association of Gloversville and Fulton County. For many years she served on the Board of the Fulton County United Way.
In 2012, Joan and Vince moved to San Diego where they spent their final years amid many new and dear friends as well as their family.
Survivors include her beloved niece, Cheryl D. Garfin of La Jolla, CA; and two nephews, Larry Donofrio of San Diego, CA and Guy Martorelli of Gloversville; also two grandnephews, Joshua and Benjamin Ayers of San Diego; two great-grandnieces, Sofia and Isabella Ayers, all of San Diego; and a sister-in-law, Jane Martorelli of Gloversville.
In addition to her husband and parents, Joan was predeceased by her sister and brother, Norma Donofrio and Leonard Martorelli.
The family will receive relatives and friends from 10 to 11 a.m. on Friday, August 3rd at Walrath & Stewart Funeral Home, 51 Fremont St; Gloversville. A Prayer Service will follow at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Matthew Wetsel officiating.
Interment will follow at Mount Carmel Cemetery, Johnstown.
