Michael J. Gancarz
Michael J. Gancarz, 86, of Prospect Avenue, Gloversville, passed away peacefully Tuesday, February 21, 2017, at Grand Strand Medical Center, Myrtle Beach, SC.
He was born on July 22, 1930, in Hackensack, NJ, a son of Michael and Minnie Bochenek Gancarz and was a 1948 graduate of Hackensack High School. Michael later attended Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. In 1985, he graduated from the 143rd Session of the FBI Academy in Quantico, VA.
Mr. Gancarz was a police officer in the city of Gloversville for thirty years, retiring in 1991 as Chief of Police.
He was a member of the Kennyetto Masonic Lodge 599 of Broadalbin and St. Patrick’s Lodge 4 of Johnstown. The Grand Lodge of New York recently bestowed him with his 50 year pin and apron, recognizing his 50 years of Masonic service.
Michael was an avid boater and a lifelong hockey fan.
He was married to Madeline E. Dell Gancarz. She passed away on December 5, 2006.
Survivors include two sons, Michael J. Gancarz III of Gloversville and Lawrence T. Gancarz of the town of Providence; a daughter, Ellen S. Nellis of Gloversville; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held on Monday from noon to 2 p.m. at the Robert M. Halgas Funeral Home Inc., 111 County Highway 106 (corner of Route 29 and Black Street) Johnstown, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. with the Rev. Linda Martin, officiating. Burial will be in Prospect Hill Cemetery, Gloversville.
