Carl “Baldy” “Doc” VanNostrand Sr.

Carl VanNostrand Sr.

Carl “Baldy” “Doc” VanNostrand Sr., 68, passed away at Osceola Regional Medical Center after a short illness on January 29, 2017. As a veteran who served during the Vietnam War, he served with honor, pride, and a love for his country on the USS Ticonderoga, USS Tullibee and as a Plank Holder on the USS Pittsburgh over his 20 years with the United States Navy.

Carl was born on February 12, 1948, in Gloversville, NY to Frederick Sr. (Ted) and Mary Christiano VanNostrand. Growing up in Mayfield, his passions were soccer, friends and family. He enlisted in the Navy to protect his country in 1968.

Carl liked to say that between two Subs and one Carrier, he had sailed on five of the seven seas. His postings took him all over the world, but you could eventually find Carl and his family near a Naval base somewhere in New England.

He was a brave and loyal submariner, as well as a patient and loving father and friend. He married Phyllis in Ocklawaha, FL on February 7, 2004. He loved carpentry work, often quoting “It’s close enough for government work” every time he pulled out a level. He spent his retirement working in home improvement stores, helping others build anything they could imagine.

Carl is survived by his father, Frederick Sr.; his son, Carl Jr.; his daughter, Karla; his siblings, Frederick Jr. (Karen), Cheryl Loucks (Johnny), Robert (Lisa), Brian Sr. (Renate), Charles; his five grandchildren; and his two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; and his wife, Phyllis.

A remembrance celebration will take place at The Clubhouse at Crystal Lake, on February 19, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. located at 34749 SR 54 W, Zephyrhills, FL. The funeral service will be on Monday, February 20, 2017, at 11 a.m., located at the Florida National Cemetery, 6502 SW 102nd Ave., Bushnell, FL 33513. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Carl’s memory to your local humane society.

Dear Lord, we come together to say a prayer for our Sailors/Submariners of the United States Navy. We are praying together for our loved ones that are in harm’s way. Lord, please continue to surround them with your shield of protection, please continue to guide our silent warriors at sea to the right paths that keep them safe. Help us all to remember what they have sacrificed, and ultimately their families. Thank you, Submariners, for what you have done to protect our freedom each and every day.
