Man allegedly beats female store clerk

AMSTERDAM — A 19-year-old Amsterdam man was charged with two felonies after assaulting a convenience store clerk, causing severe injuries to her face.

According to a news release from the Amsterdam Police Department, Joseph P. Delbridge was charged with third-degree burglary, second-degree assault, third-degree assault and fourth-degree criminal mischief on Thursday.

Police said on Wednesday around 4:06 p.m. police responded to the Shakir Convenience Store at 35 Reid St. for a report of an assault.

When police arrived, they found a female victim with a severe injury to her face and a male with an injury to his hand.

Police said the victims reported that a male had entered the store without a shirt and when asked by the store owner and the clerk to leave the store, the male became irate and began to grab items off the shelves and began to throw them around and at the clerk and store owner.

The man refused to leave and proceeded to attack the female clerk and punch her in the face, causing severe injuries.

After the attack, the man ran out of the store and got into a vehicle and drove away.

Police obtained video surveillance from the store which captured the attack and the suspect’s vehicle.

Police identified Delbridge as the suspect and located him driving his car on Market Street.

Delbridge was taken into custody without incident.

He was held for arraignment.

The female victim was taken to St. Mary’s where she was treated for her injuries.
