MCSO no longer requires class for pistol permit

FONDA — The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office will no longer require a paperwork class to apply for a pistol permit.

A sheriff’s release issued Thursday said the necessary paperwork for a pistol permit application is now provided on the county website under the sheriff’s office page.

There is a blank set to print for completion and a filled out set for review as an example for completion.

Sheriff Jeffrey Smith is urging the public to see this link: https://www.co.montgomery.ny.us/web/sites/departments/sheriff/pistol.asp

The release noted that for years, applicants have been required to signup and attend a class at the sheriff’s office, with the sole purpose of being instructed how to complete the paperwork.

“We recently added a safety class requirement for application submittal that is geared completely towards handgun safety, ownership and appropriate laws,” the release stated. “It is our goal that this will make the process easier and require less time on the part of an applicant. The time spent applying will concentrate on being a responsible gun owner which we feel is most important. Hopefully more people will apply, the process will be easier/smoother and together we will increase the professionalism for all involved.”

There is no change in fee structure for the application.

For questions regarding the paperwork or the process, the public can call (518) 853-5515, Mondays through Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Starting at $4.15/week.
