Gloversville approves demo bid

GLOVERSVILLE — The Common Council on Tuesday night awarded a roughly $534,000 bid to Jackson Demolition Service Inc. of Schenectady for demolition of the deteriorating building 12-18 S. Main St.

Action by the council at City Hall followed a brief report on the bid by Department of Public Works Director Chris Perry.

The bid was for $539,000 minus a $5,575 deduction because the city is providing all the topsoil and seed.

Perry said Jackson wants to get its permits in place within 50 days for the summer project.

“Obviously, they have a good reputation,” he said of the firm.

Portions of the building started collapsing in July 2017. The building has been vacant for a number of years. The collapse at the time took down some wires near the building and bricks fell on the uncollapsed portions of the roof at a neighboring building. The building that collapsed was listed at the time as owned by Two Great Guys Corp. of Saratoga Springs. The company had purchased the property in 2008 for $6,400.

In other council-approved resolutions Tuesday:

— The council formally established the city’s 2021 Summer Recreation Program. The city is conducting a six-week program from July 19 to Aug. 27 at Littauer Field. The program is available to 72 city of Gloversville children between five and 12, with 36 children each in morning and afternoon programs. Participants are approved on a first-some, first-served basis.

The resolution said temporary employees will be hired to oversee the program: a camp director at $15 per hour, an on-call health director at $600, and eight part-time counselors at $12.50 per hour.

City Clerk Jennifer Mazur was authorized to execute any documents and permits from the state Department of Health.

— Finance Commissioner Tammie Weiterschan was authorized to executive a budget modification of $13,000 for the Summer Recreation Program related to expenses and sponsorships.

— The council established rates with the Gloversville Enlarged School District regarding fire personnel attendance at school functions. A fire personnel presence has been requested at upcoming GESD events. Hourly rates are as follows: battalion chief — $84.45 per hour; captain — $76.89 per hour; and firefighter — $69.93 per hour.

— Rates were also established with the GESD regarding police personnel attendance at school functions, which was also requested at upcoming events. Hourly rates were set as follows: captain — $104,55; lieutenant — $97.34; detective sergeant — $93.71; sergeant — $90.06; detective — $87.83; corporal — $81.45; and police officer — $77.67.
